A Modern Basement Built By Experts
An existing client approached us for a comprehensive basement remodel of their 1960s home. Like most basements from this era, the space had been renovated multiple times over the years with mixed styles and finishes. The homeowners knew they wanted to update some areas but ultimately discovered it was necessary to renovate most of the basement to achieve their vision for how they wanted to use the space.
Managing Space & Providing Warmth
As with most 1960s homes and basements, this space presented unique challenges that required creative solutions and careful planning.
Obstacles we faced included finding the best layout to incorporate a new bathroom without undertaking major mechanical work. Additionally, we needed to determine how to incorporate a bedroom space without sacrificing the family room area. Finally, having no finished flooring in any of the spaces left the basement feeling uncomfortable and cold, with no truly welcoming areas for the family to enjoy.
The Results: A Complete Basement Transformation
We successfully updated the original wood burning fireplace into a functional heating source and designed a kitchenette area that the family can now enjoy in their updated family room and entertaining space. Knowing the clients were looking for alternative heating and cooling solutions for their home, we inspected the fireplace and installed a new wood burning insert, along with a new masonry façade and hearth.
Adding the bathroom in the basement gave the homeowners the flexibility to use part of the space for both an office and bedroom, solving their layout challenges without major mechanical disruption.
